Corus R6: Narrow escape for Karjakin

Carlsen-KarjakinAfter six rounds at Corus the tournament leader is still Sergey Karjakin, but today he had a narrow escape against Magnus Carlsen who missed a clear win at least once. Morozevich is not himself, and lost against Movsesian like a child. Adams grinded down Wang Yue to score the third win in the A group.

In a Chebanenko Slav, Carlsen's 11.Bd3 was new. He soon got a very promising position when Karjakin overlooked 26.Nb6! but then Carlsen just couldn't deliver the final blow, which was 35.Qxg6!. Disappointed, he tried for long to win a rook ending that looked drawish from the start.

Ivanchuk held his own against Aronian, and Stellwagen-Van Wely was also drawn but a very sharp one. According to his second Chuchelov, Van Wely was probably underestimating White's chances in the early middlegame. In the post-mortem the Dutchman suggested 21.Qh5 as a dangerous alternative.

radja_karjakinRadjabov recovered well from his loss yesterday by defeating Kamsky. Using a Fischer favorite (5.Nc5 versus the Caro-Kann) he got quite a murky position and then outcalculated the American, who was in timetrouble as well. Kamsky shook his head after 33.b5, which he probably missed.

movsesian_morozevichMorozevich is having a very tough tournament and today he lost again, and quite quickly too. In the end, 34.Bxc5 also wins, as Movsesian admitted in the press room, and so we could all stop wondering what was wrong with our calculating capabilities! The last decisive game, by Adams, was the subject of the press conference, which you will be able to enjoy later at ChessVibes. Wang Yue is almost at a point where he has lost more games in 2009 than in 2008 (or is he already?).

In B, Kasimdzhanov missed a win against Caruana and so he has to share the lead with Navara and Short after today, who beat Vallejo and Reinderman respectively. So won against Leon Hoyos to grab sole lead, and he's chased by... Bosboom. Yes, the Dutch qualifier won again after his first loss yesterday!
