Showing no mercy for his young compatriot, Ivanchuk used his game against leader Karjakin to improve his score in the 8th round in Wijk aan Zee. After a draw against Smeets, it's now Movsesian in sole lead. Morozevich continued his disastrous tournament with a zero against Wang Yue.The game between the Ukrainians Ivanchuk and Karjakin was theory for a long time: White's 19.Qc3 deviated from a game Jansa-Sobek from 1999. Very pretty was 28.Bc5!, the main idea behind the forced series of moves, and it turned out that White had more than enough compensation. But only after a mistake at move 28, where ...Re8 was necessary, Black got into serious trouble, and the game was over surprisingly quickly. And so Ivanchuk, who pays a visit to the press room each day checking his email and watching the games, joined the journalists with a smile on his face again.Using a rare line against Smeets' Petroff, Movsesian didn't get very much with White and soon decided that a draw would be fine for today. Fine enough to grab sole lead in the standings, in fact, thanks to Karjakin's first loss. For the Dutchman it was another solid performance after his unfortunate loss yesterday. In fact, all three Dutch participants are doing OK. Van Wely and Smeets are on 50% while Stellwagen, who drew with Adams today, is on minus one.
Morozevich couldn't use yesterday's game to gain some new confidence; instead he had yet another off-day. His opening play already looked a bit shaky; perhaps he had missed the "anti-positional" 13.Bxb8 with which Wang Yue could keep his extra pawn on the board. As he showed many times before in 2008, the Chinese has more than enough endgame technique to handle such positions.Radjabov, Dominguez, Carlsen and Kamsky had drawn very quickly and especially the American wasn't too unhappy with the result. He immediately started celebrating his extra rest day by asking for some directions to go to Amsterdam and do some shopping. Kamsky hasn't been very fortunate in the tournament so far, and not very accessible to the media either. Undoubtedly he has his mind already on the happenings of next month.
A very interesting draw was Aronian-Van Wely. 16...Qd5 was great but, unlike Van Wely thought when he played it, it didn't completely solve Black's problems yet. Aronian came up with some very strong moves, like 21.Ne5!, 24.Bg5!, 26.g4! and 29.f4!, after which the Dutchman needed to create some "cheap tricks" (his own words!) to stay in the game. In timetrouble, the Armenian lost his advantage and after move 40 he had to fight for the draw himself, but he looked confident from the start, probably having calculated the forced series of moves till the end.
Short is still leading the B group after escaping with a draw against Volokitin, who is half a point behind, with Motylev. A risky opening idea quickly lead to a slightly worse ending, which the Englishman managed to draw six hours later. Vallejo won easily against Caruana while l'Ami scored his second win in a row, against Efimenko.In the C group, co-leader So dropped a full piece against outsider Holzke and so Hillarp Persson has the best qualifying chances again, after beating Leon Hoyos. The Swede is now a point clear going into the second rest day.
