Deviatkin wins Doeberl CupAndrei Deviatkin won the Doeberl Cup in Canberra, Australia. The Russian grandmaster finished on 7.5/9, half a point clear of GMs Dejan Bojkov of Bulgaria and Sune Berg Hansen of Denmark. As in previous years, Australia's retired GM Ian Rogers provided expert commentary which was posted in multiple videos on YouTube.

The 2011 Doeberl Cup took place April 21st-25th at the Hellenic Club in Canberra, the capital of Australia. The top entries were GMs Sune Berg Hansen (Denmark), David Arutinian (2575), Andrei Deviatkin (Russia), Dejan Bojkov (Bulgaria), David Smerdon (Australia) and Darryl Johansen (Australia).

Like the Neckar Open, the tournament had a tough schedule, with on the first four days two games a day and one on the last day. On top of that the players were not allowed to agree to draws in under 30 moves.

The aim of this rule is to encourage a competitive, fighting tournament, and we trust all players will adhere to this in a sportsmanlike manner. (NB This does not include claims of 'draws by repetition of position')

However, several games in the Premier did end peacefully in under 30 moves, so apparently this rule wasn't enforced too strongly.

Russian grandmaster Andrei Deviatkin finished clear first with 7.5/9. After three wins he drew with GM Dejan Bojkov of Bulgaria, and then beat the talented FM Max Illingworth and IM Stephen Solomon, both from Australia. Two more draws followed, against Sune Berg Hansen (Denmark) and David Smerdon (Australia). In the last round Deviatkin beat Georgian GM David Arutinian with black to win the envelope with 4000 Australian dollars (about 3000 Euro or US $4360).

Many of the same players travelled to Sydney to play in the open there, which is currently under way.
