Carlsen may be top seed, but Dortmund is definitely one of Kramnik's favourite events, having been the winner a staggering eight times before. He will also have the added incentive this year of trying to beat Dmitry Jakovenko, who pipped him to the world no. 5 spot on the latest official FIDE ranking list.
Peter Leko is always hard to beat, and is the reigning Dortmund champion. Etienne Bacrot will be hoping to make the most of his opportunity in this high-profile event, which he qualified to play in by winning the huge Aeroflot Open earlier this year.
Local fans will be cheering on the German no.1 Arkadij Naiditch who is the lowest ranked competitor at a mere 2700 Elo!!!
