The 13th Open Bavaria Chess Championship took place October 31-November 8 in Bad Wiessee, Germany, about 50 km south of Munich. It was a 9-round Swiss with a time control of 40 moves in 90 minutes followed by 30 minutes + 30 seconds per move to finish the game.

Viorel Iordachescu: 1st on tiebreak

This year's top seeds were Igor Khenkin (2613), Viorel Iordachescu (2607) and Eduardas Rozentalis (2603). Only Iordachescu indeed managed to finish on first place; after starting with 5 out of 5 he finished with 2.5/4, which was just enough.

It almost when wrong when Iordachescu lost to Gupta in the penultimate round, but all is well that ends well: a nice win against Krivoborodov in the last round. The Moldavian grandmaster shared the total of € 7,000 (the sum of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th prize) with GMs Vitaly Kunin, Abhijeet Gupta and Gerald Hertneck.
