Hungary Enters The PRO Chess League With The Budapest Gambit

Dec 30, 2016, 9:16 PM 0

The Budapest Gambit promise to be one of the most dangerous teams in the Green Division. While they may not all play the opening for which their team is name, they have a host of young grandmasters and international masters to lead Hungary's only PRO Chess League team.

The star of the team has to be GM Benjamin Gledura. He's the highest rated player on the team, and he just made the grandmaster title this year. He is ranked number seven in the world for players under 18 years old. Here he is outplaying the legendary Viswanathan Anand in Gibraltar of this (barely) year.

GM Oliver Mehok is another grandmaster from Budapest. He made the international master title at the age of 17, and after five years of hard work and dedication, he earned made the grandmaster title at 22.

Other 2400s to lead the Gambit are IMs Mate Bagy, Gabor Nagy and Attila Vertetics.

There is also Barbara Juhasz, the only woman on the team. She has won the National Hungarian Youth Championship many times in her scholastic career.

With so many other strong players in the Budapest area, it wouldn't be a surprise to see a few big names get added to this already talented roster throughout the season. So many of the top youth players in the world are already in the PRO Chess League, and Gledura is another kid who we could be hearing a lot about in the coming years. It's great that chess fans all over the world will be exposed to these talented kids as he joins top ranked youngsters like Jeffery Xiong (Dallas) and Alan Pinchot (Buenos Aires) in the inaugural season of the league.

The PRO Chess League welcomes the Budapest Gambit!
