‘I bravely decided to continue’

Chess is hot.

"My game against Stellwagen yesterday was really interesting. I got a slight advantage from the opening. Later on we started to complicate matters. He offered a pawn, which looked just like a temporay sacrifice. However I found a way to keep the pawn, but this allowed him winning an exchange but costing another two pawns. So this was basically a good change from my side. He soon won one of the three pawns back, but then I got a strong initiative and mating threats around his king. But it was very complicated and I didn't find anything convincing, which resulted in that I used up a lot of time and run into a horrible timetrouble.

At one point I could have forced a draw playing 35.Ng6+ Qxg6 36.Qc8 Qxf7 37.Qxf8 Qg8 with a draw. But using up almost all my time I bravely decided to continue with only 34 seconds left for the remaining five moves. Unfortunately for me he found the right defence and I didn't have any advantage left. Still there should be a draw of course, but I got totally surprised by his 39.Rf6 and despite having four seconds for the last move I didn't manage. I played 40.Rg1 in time but didn't reach to push the clock. This end position is still a draw, but here it's already Black who is trying.

Today playing Black against Khenkin, who has lost two games in a row now. Probably he still likes to try with white today, so I am looking forward to a tough battle again!"
