Johannesberg Koeksisters Seek Experience
It's not every day you see a team named after a donut, but the Koeksisters are bucking the trend. This team of some of the top players in South Africa is a welcome addition to the PRO Chess League.
We reached out to some of their key players for quotes:
IM Rodwell Makoto won the South African Open in 2012 and is "grateful for this opportunity to test my strength against strong players."

Team manager Francis Oberholzer says: "This is a great chance for our whole team to learn and improve, but also a good start for our community, as in the future to help improve some of our up-and-coming players players in South Africa."
Matt Pon says: "I think this tournament is a great opportunity for us as we don't have that many rapid tournaments. It will be exciting to play against top players from other countries."
And Roberto de Abreau says: "I am so excited in the PRO chess league as residing in a geographically isolated chess region this new innovation offers to utilize technological resources too create a serious pro-chess tournament"
Roberto hits the nail on the head with the purpose of the PRO Chess League. This league is a way to bring chess communities together around the globe and give players everywhere the chance to face off against some of the best players in the world.
We look forward to seeing what Johannesburg brings to the table in the first season of the PRO Chess League.
