Vladimir Kramnik won in style today in Bilbao in the first round, beating the current world #1 Magnus Carlsen.

Kramnik (pictured) had a nagging advantage throughout the game, and a small slip from Carlsen was punished in great positional style. In the final position, poor Carlsen was almost completely tied up leaving Kramnik to win at his leisure.

In the other first round encounter, Shirov's fire was effectively repelled by Anand's flameproof Berlin Wall to leave the honours shared.
