After the five draws on day one, it was Dzagnidze who won the first game in Lausanne. Her opponent, the Kazakh IM Zhansaya Abdumalik, is advised to check the theory of the London System because her play was quite inconsistent. Her voluntary weakening of the kingside was asking for an attack, and Dzagnidze delivered it ruthlessly.

Goryachkina's win was of a different nature: She had a positional edge in a Queen's Indian when GM Alexandra Kosteniuk blundered on move 23. Her rook got misplaced, and she was forced to give up a pawn, thereby weakening her other central pawn that also left the board soon.
