Lev_Aronian3.jpgFrancisco Vallejo Pons had an excellent opportunity to record his first win in round 7 at the Linares 2010 tournament.  Playing black against Lev Aronian (pictured), he gained a clear advantage but failed to put the game away.

Even as the draw was agreed on move 48, the chess engines were still screaming WIN! but Vallejo's nerves must be shredded after two ugly losses in the last two rounds.  A lucky escape for Aronian, who is yet to win or lose a game in the event.

Topalov held Gashimov to a draw to retain his commanding lead, and Gelfand made no headway against Grischuk.

The standings after round 7:

Topalov, Veselin  BUL  2805 5
Aronian, Levon  ARM  2781 3½
Gashimov, Vugar  AZE  2759 3½
Grischuk, Alexander  RUS  2736 3½
Gelfand, Boris  ISR  2761 3
Vallejo Pons, Francisco  ESP  2705 2½
