phplBSI8K.jpegThe Netherlands Grandmaster Loek van Wely took first place at the Sydney International Open, held from 2-7 April.

Van Wely scored 7½/9 points to finish half a point ahead of top seed Li Chao of China, whom he beat in round 8.

The competition featured 12 Grandmasters in a total field of 68 players.

The time control used was 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30 second increment from the start.

"Lucky" Loek won the first prize of $4,000 for his efforts, from a total prize fund of more than $14,000. Full results here.
