MTel Masters Round 3
Yet more interesting games at Mtel in round 3, but no decisive results from all the action. Topalov pushed very hard in his game against Dominguez, but his first win of the tournament remains elusive. In an unbalanced, tactical game both players achieved advanced passers, but Dominguez' bishops helped him hold the draw against Topalov's knights.
Ivanchuk got on the scoreboard at last by holding Carlsen to a draw with the black pieces. After mutual time trouble, exchanges led to a rook ending with a minuscule plus for Carlsen and a theoretically drawn game resulted.
In the Yue-Shirov clash, a nice little combination from Shirov involving a temporary exchange sacrifice earned him a draw.
The standings after round 3:
Wang Yue | CHN | 2 |
Carlsen, Magnus | NOR | 2 |
Shirov, Alexei | ESP | 2 |
Dominguez Perez, Leinier | CUB | 1½ |
Topalov, Veselin | BUL | 1 |
Ivanchuk, Vassily | UKR | ½ |
