There were two fireworks and a damp squib in the fifth round at MTel.  Ivanchuk and Shirov both had the White pieces against the sharp Sicilian Najdorf and both replied with 6.Bg5.  However, neither managed to win!

Ivanchuk caught Topalov's King in the middle of the board and looked to have winning chances, but time trouble once again proved his downfall and Topa turned the tables to win.

Shirov also pressed hard against Dominguez, but the Cuban was equal to the task and a draw was eventually agreed.

The damp squib was Carlsen v Yue which ended after 25 moves with a repetition.

Monday is a rest day.  The second half of the tournament starts on Tuesday.

The standings after 5 rounds out of 10.

Carlsen, Magnus   3
Shirov, Alexei  3
Topalov, Veselin  3
Dominguez Perez, Leinier
