Naiditsch Wins Villarrobledo Rapid
The 24th international rapid chess tournament in Villarrobledo, Spain took place from 25-26th July, with 124 competitors slugging it out for the title won by Veselin Topalov last year.
At the end of the 9 round Swiss event, it was the German Grandmaster Arkadij Naiditsch (pictured) who finished the winner on 7.5/9, ahead of the likes of Alexei Shirov, Alexander Grischuk and Ruslan Ponomariov.
Naiditsch set a blistering pace early on, scoring 6/6! Although he lost in round 7 to Vadim Milov, he recovered to beat Ponomariov in round 8 to clinch the title and a cheque for 3,000 euros.
