Gashimov, Naiditsch and Motylev lead with 2.5 out of 3 at the 10th Karpov tournament in Poikovsky, but bigger news is the bad start of Alexei Shirov. The winner of the 2009 M-Tel Masters is in last place, having lost his first three games.

The 10th edition of the Karpov tournament takes place June 3rd-12th in Poikovsky, Russia. It's a 10-player round-robin with a rest day on June 8th.Poikovsky is located in the Nefteyugansk region of Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous area. Its name comes from the nearby river Poyka. The population is close to 30,000 people and the main economic drive is the extraction of oil and gas.

In just three days Shirov has lost many of his rating points he gained in Sofia last month. He had been on a virtual fifth place in the live list (see right column), but due to his third loss in a row, today, he dropped out of the top 10.Gashimov, Naiditsch and Motylev had the best start so far with 2.5 out of 3. Emil Sutovsky, who was busy being Gata Kamsky's manager in the last half year, is back in a top tournament and started well with two draws and a win against Inarkiev - and what a win. The Petroff was crushed in a mere 22 moves.[TABLE=739]
