And the winner is... After doing a lot of sorting out, today I can announce the winner of the Summer Contest that was held during August at this website. Who beat the rest in tactical puzzles, endgame studies and trivia questions? And the winner is...

The winner of the Doggers-schaak Summer Contest is

Robert Kikkert of Amsterdam!

He can pick a free book published by and sold at New in Chess!

When I checked for the answers I used the following system: one point for 'you get the idea', two points for 'almost okay' and three points for 'excellent'. Kikkert got no less than 57 points. Coincidently, shared second were three participants with 41 points. These were Francis Cottegnie, Hans J. Larooij and Marinus Luyks.

Some funny answers were emailed to me for the contest.

At question 12/24 ('Which player said he couldn't loose when his wife was in the tournament hall?' - the answer being Lasker):

"It was about his wife Kohn Martha. Spicy detail: he already made an appeal to her presence when she was still his mistress."

"Another possible answer to question 14 (except for: White drops his king at f6): White already played his king to f6 and forgot to press his clock, so he finished his move only by pressing the clock, hehe."

And a very detailed answer to the last question (which player dropped off his chair when his opponent Keres sacrificed his queen):

"In 1961 Keres sacrificed his queen on move 35 (Qxc1). A rook, two pawns on the b- and c-file and a black bishop decided the game. The game lasted for 23 moves. The chair was still intact and could be used afterwards."

A lack of time keeps me from digress further about the puzzles and their possible answers. In any case I hope everybody liked the contest; I might do something similar in the future. For now, Robert Kikkert: congratulations!
