Russia-1 wins European Seniors Team Championship
The first team from Russia won the European Seniors Team Championship in Rogaska Slatina, Slovenia. Their team consisted of GM Evgeni Vasiukov (2455), GM Oleg Chernikov (2415), IM Nikolai Mishuchkov (2431), IM Anatoli Shvedchikov (2405) and GM Nikolai Pushkov (2390) and team captain Alexander Filipenko. The best score on the first board was achieved by 81-year-old GM Viktor Kortchnoi, who scored 7.5/9 for Switzerland and only lost to Vasiukov.

The 11th European Senior Team Championship was organized by the European Chess Union, the Slovenian Chess Federation and Šahohlačnik d.o.o. and held from March 26th to April 5th, 2012 in Rogaska Slatina, Slovenia.
Any number of teams from each ECU federation had the right to participate. Each team consisted of four players; in addition one reserve player could be nominated. Men had to have reached the age of 60, women 50, by December 31st, 2012.
A total of 46 teams competed in a 9-round Swiss event. Because the teams could represent a national federation or any regional structure of a national federation, there was for example a Russia-1, a Russia-2 and a 'Russia-Saint Petersburg'.
Russia-1 retained the title they won last year (with the same players) by beating Norway in the last round. The narrowly edged out their compatriots from St Petersburg on tiebreak. Both teams has finished on 15 match but Russia 1 had scored more board points: 25 against 22,5.
The best individual results on board 1 were scoreed by 81-year-old (!) Viktor Kortchnoi (Switzerland, 7.5/9), Evgeni Vasiukov (Russia-1, 6.5/8), Anatoly Donchenko (Germany-Hessen, 6.5/9), Galina Strutinskaya (Russia-2, 6/8), Bozidar Ivanovic (Montenegro, 6/9), Ian Rose (Belgium, 6/9) and George Danner (Austria, 5.5/8).
