Shock Defeat For Anand In Nanjing

If Anand was on a high after his confident win over Topalov in Nanjing yesterday, he came down to earth with a bump in round four.

Playing ambitiously with the black pieces, Anand was clearly looking for more than a draw but Bacrot was equal to the challenge and a fascinating study-like endgame resulted.

Anand looked to be struggling, and Bacrot held his nerve and played accurately to earn his first ever victory against the world champion.

The tournament leader Magnus Carlsen also had a tough day at the office against Gashimov, but his endgame skills just kept his head above water long enough to prevent another upset.

With Topalov making no impression on Wang Yue's defences, Carlsen still leads the competition with Bacrot now in second place!

 Carlsen, Magnus 2826 3
 Bacrot, Etienne 2716
 Anand, Viswanathan 2800 2
 Gashimov, Vugar 2719
 Topalov, Veselin 2803
 Wang Yue 2732

The standout match for round five is Carlsen v Topalov.  Anand will take on Gashimov, and Wang Yue faces Bacrot.
