Study of the Year

Onlangs bepaalde de Permanente Commissie van de FIDE voor Schaakcompositie wie dit jaar de prestigieuze 'studie van het jaar' heeft gewonnen. IM Yochanan Afek, speler, trainer, eindspelcomponist, co-winnaar van groep 2 van het BDO-toernooi en zelf lid van deze commissie, vroeg om het verspreiden van deze mooie studie onder zo veel mogelijk schakers. Bij dezen! Recently the Permanent Commission of Fide for Chess Composition (PCCC) awarded the Study of the Year Award 2005. IM Yochanan Afek, player, trainer, endgame study composer, co-winner of group 2 of the BDO-tournament en member himself of this commission, asked the media to spread this study among chess enthusiasts. No problem!

Het volgende meesterwerk is benoemd studie van het jaar 2005. De studie werd gecomponeerd voor het speciale compositietoernooi om de vijftigste geboortedag van John Nunn te vieren. Joeri Bazlov (1947) is al vier decennia lang een belangrijke Russische studiecomponist. De aantekeningen zijn van John Nunn zelf (zie ook?Ǭ†www.bstephen.freeuk.com).

De 'studie van het jaar' is niet per se de beste studie maar meer een titel voor een geweldige prestatie die een groot publiek aanspreekt, niet alleen vanwege de hoge artistieke kwaliteiten maar ook vanwege een duidelijke verbinding met en nut voor het betreffende eindspel in de praktijk.

Remise?Ǭ†

1. Ph8! Het alternatief is 1.Kg7? Pd6 2.Pe5 g3 maar zwart kan zijn pion op g3 vastleggen en langzaam de positie van zijn stukken verbeteren. Natuurlijk moet hij paardruil vermijden, wat zou leiden tot een positionele remise zolang de witte koning f1 kan bereiken. Hoewel de winst niet eenvoudig is, kan zwart deze uiteindelijk wel bereiken, bijvoorbeeld 3.Kg6 Ld8! waarmee de witte koning van e6 gehouden wordt. 1...Pe5 De enige winstkans is om te voorkomen dat de witte koning meteen naar g6 gaat. Na 1...Pxh8 2.Kxh8 Kc6 3.Kg7 Kd5 4.Kg6 Le3 kan zwart zijn loper niet naar f4 of h4 spelen zonder zijn pion te verliezen, dus hij verliest nog een tempo als wit de g-pion met de koning aanvalt. 5.Kf5 g3 6.Kg4 Lf2 7.Kf3 Kd4 8.Ke2! De koning bereikt f1, met een standaard positionele remise. 2. Pf7! Met al een stuk minder, biedt wit er nog een aan! 2...Pxf7 3.Kg6! Pe5+! De beste kans is om de loper te offeren, want 3...Kc6 4.Kxf7 Kd5 5.Kg6 is remise zoals we al hebben gezien. 4. Kf5! Weigert het aanbod. 4.Kxg5? verliest na 4...Kc6! 5.Kf4 Kd6! en zwart heeft de oppositie 6.Ke4 (6.Kf5 Kd5 wint) 6...Ke6 7.Kf4 Kf6 8.g3 Ke6 9.Kg5 Kd5 10.Kf5 Kd4 11.Kf4 Kd3! en de g-pion valt. 4...Pf7 Ongelofelijk maar waar; zwart kan niet winnen met twee stukken meer. 4...Pf3 5.Kxg4 en 4...Lf6 5.Kxf6 Pf3 6.Kf5 Ph2 7.Kf4 zijn allebei duidelijk remise.. 5.Kg6 Pe5+ 6.Kf5! ?Ǭ??¢‚Ǩ‚Äú?Ǭ?

The Study of the Year award for 2005 has been granted by the PCCC to the following masterpiece from the special composing tourney held last year to celebrate the 50th birthday of over the board and solving grandmaster John Nunn.

Yuri Bazlov (born 1947) has been a prominent Russian composer for the last four decades. The notes by John Nunn himself are from the original instructive award (see http://www.bstephen.freeuk.com/).

The Study of the Year is not necessarily the very best one but rather an excellent effort that would appeal to the general chess public, not just for its superb artistic merits but also for its evident linkage and contribution to the practical ending.

Draw

1. Nh8! The alternative is 1.Kg7? Nd6 2.Ne5 g3 but Black can secure his pawn on g3 and gradually improve the position of his pieces. Of course, he must avoid the exchange of knights, which leads to a positional draw provided White's king can reach f1. Although the win is not easy, it can be accomplished in the end; for example, 3.Kg6 Bd8! stopping the white king reaching e6, after which it is very hard for Black to displace the centralized white pieces. 1...Ne5 the only winning chance is to prevent White's king moving immediately to g6. After 1...Nxh8 2.Kxh8 Kc6 3.Kg7 Kd5 4.Kg6 Be3 Black cannot move his bishop to f4 or h4 without losing his pawn, so he loses another tempo later when White attacks the g3-pawn with his king 5.Kf5 g3 6.Kg4 Bf2 7.Kf3 Kd4 8.Ke2! The king reaches f1, with a standard positional draw. 2. Nf7! Already one piece down, White offers a second one! 2...Nxf7 3.Kg6! Ne5+! The best try is to sacrifice the bishop, as 3...Kc6 4.Kxf7 Kd5 5.Kg6 draws as in the note to Black's first move. 4. Kf5! Declining the offer. 4.Kxg5? loses after 4...Kc6! 5.Kf4 Kd6! gaining the opposition 6.Ke4 (6.Kf5 Kd5 wins) 6...Ke6 7.Kf4 Kf6 8.g3 Ke6 9.Kg5 Kd5 10.Kf5 Kd4 11.Kf4 Kd3! and the g3-pawn falls. 4...Nf7 Amazing but true; Black cannot win despite being two clear minor pieces up. 4...Nf3 5.Kxg4 and; 4...Bf6 5.Kxf6 Nf3 6.Kf5 Nh2 7.Kf4 are both clear draws. 5.Kg6 Ne5+ 6.Kf5! draw.
