After beating Peter Svidler in only 19 moves, Artyom Timofeev took over the lead in round 9 at the Russian Championship Superfinal. He shares the first spot with Evgeny Alekseev - both players are on 6/9.

At Moscow's Central Chess Club the Russian Championship Superfinal takes place from October 3 to 15. Play starts daily at 15:00 hours Moscow time, which is 13:00 CET and 07:00 EST.

After drawing two games in round 7 and 8, tournament leader Peter Svidler was still on clear first place, with an undefeated 5.5/8 score. However, the grandmaster from St Petersburg suffered a small tragedy yesterday: in a well-known Isolated Queen's Pawn position which resulted from a Panov Caro-Kann (but can also arise from e.g. a Nimzo), Svidler deviated from theory at move 15 and got mated only four moves later!

Black is supposed to play 14...h6! 15.Bh4 Qe8! which was suggested by Chiburdanidze and Gufeld a long time ago and actually already tested, in another Timofeev game, against Grigoriants last year in Moscow. On Saturday (a free day) there was a football tournament organized in Moscow with participation of grandmasters, Russian federation officials and journalists. Let's hope that Svidler hasn't suffered another injury as a goalkeeper...

And so both Alekseev and Timofeev have now overtaken Svidler in the standings. Before yesterday Timofeev beat Maslek and then drew Sakaev, while Alekseev beat Riazantsev, then drew Lastin and then defeated Maslak. Alexander Morozevich seemed to be gone in the fight for first place when Tomashevsky beat him in round 8, but he still has a very small chance after his win against Riazantsev.
Round 7 results Svidler - Tomashevsky 1/2 Vitiugov - Sakaev 1/2 Inarkiev - Morozevich 1/2 Jakovenko - Lastin 1-0 Alekseev - Riazantsev 1-0 Timofeev - Maslak 1-0
Round 8 results Svidler - Vitiugov 1/2 Tomashevsky - Morozevich 1/2 Lastin - Alekseev 1/2 Sakaev - Timofeev 1/2 Maslak - Jakovenko 1/2 Riazantsev - Inarkiev 1/2
Round 9 results Timofeev - Svidler 1-0 Morozevich - Riazantsev 1-0 Jakovenko - Sakaev 1-0 Alekseev - Maslak 1-0 Vitiugov - Tomashevsky 1/2 Inarkiev - Lastin 1-0
