US Championships commence

The Frank K Berry US Chess Championships are underway and produced a first round upset as reigning men's champion Alex Shabalov (pictured, left) lost to a former champion Alex Yermolinsky (pictured, right) by blundering after just 18 moves.

Gregory Kaidanov, Alexander Ivanov, Boris Gulko, Dmitry Gurevich and Sergey Kudrin all won their first round games.
