Wang Yue and Yu Yangyi had a good start at the Hainan Dangzhou Super GM tournament. Both GMs scored 3/4 in this second edition that has the full Chinese top 10 playing, including stars like Wang Hao, Hou Yifan, Ni Hua and Bu Xiangzhi. As we mentioned already in
our report on the recent Chinese Championship, there is a lot of chess to be played in China for its top players. First, there was the FIDE Zonal 3.5 tournament from March 19th to 29th. Then, the 2011 Chinese Individual Championships, from March 30th to April 10th in Xinghua, Jiangsu.Right after the national championship, the Chinese GMs travelled to Tianjing for three rounds in the Chinese League, from April 12th to 14th. The ladies continued to play from April 15th to 25th in the first ‘Women Celebrity Tournament’ in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. And now, a month later, there is the 2nd Hainan Dangzhou Super GM tournament. Last year's edition, won by Bu Xiangzhi, was a success,
writes WGM Gu Xiaobing at Chessbase.
The 1st Hainan Danzhou super grandmaster chess tournament was successfully held in the summer of 2010, and was a perfect combination of chess culture and the rich natural resources of Danzhou City. Aiming to build a "smart city" and "national chess town", the local governor has already signed a five-year contract of strategic cooperation with the General Administration of Sports Management Center.
Back then,
we noted the many spectacular games played by the Chinese players, and this year the tournament has already seen many attractive fights as well. This 2nd edition is held from May 15 to 24 and is again a 10-player, single round-robin. The time control is 90 minutes for the whole game plus 30 seconds per move starting from move one. Draw offers are not allowed before move 30.The list of players makes clear how strong this tournament really is - there is not a single participants rated below 2600. In fact it's the exact top 10 at the moment in China:

Presentation of the players during the opening ceremony
16-year old Yu Yangyi had the best start and was leading after three rounds. First he scored a solid draw with the black pieces against top seed Wang Hao. In the second round he defeated reigning Women World Champion Hou Yifan in a sharp Nimzo-Indian, which was followed by another win, with Black against Li Chao.Today Yu Yangyi drew in spectacular fashion with White against Bu Xiangzhi. This allowed Wang Yue, who beat Hou Yifan in round 4, to join him in the lead with 3 points out of 4 games. Wang Yue is known for his solid play and was even
nicknamed 'Sleepy Panda'. However, his game with White against Zhou Jianchao was a great attack full of sacrifices. It seems that the Panda woke up and has turned into a 21st century Mikhail Tal!
