Eerlijk gezegd vrees ik het ergste. Het zou me verbazen als de heren Kramnik en Topalov nog tot elkaar te brengen zijn. Kirsan Iljoemzjinov is inmiddels op weg naar Elista (hij had een onderonsje met Poetin in Sochi) maar of hij bereid is de fout van de Commissie van Beroep terug te draaien, zoals Yasser Seirawan in een open brief van hem vraagt? Hm... Honestly, I fear the worst. It would surprise me if Mr. Kramnik and Mr. Topalov would be reunified to play for reunification again. In the meantime Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is on his way to Elista (he had a meeting with Putin in Sochi) but whether he's prepared to take back the erroneous decision of the Appeals Committee, as Yasser Seirawan is asking him in an open letter...

Re: Crisis in de WK-match, Elista 2006

Beste Kirsan,

Ik schrijf je een open brief over de gebeurtenissen van vandaag, tijdens de Verenigings-wereldkampioenschapsmatch 2006 tussen de Klassieke Wereldkampioen Vladimir Kramnik en de FIDE Wereldkampioen Veselin Topalov.

Veels te lang heeft de schaakwereld te maken gehad met een verschrikkelijke scheuring, en een succesvol einde van de huidige match is van onschatbare waarde voor de schaakfans en de toekomst van onze sport. Terwijl de gemoederen hoog oplopen op dit moment, is het hoog tijd dat alle partijen heel duidelijk hun goodwill tonen zodat de match verder kan gaan, zodat de spelers hun kunde achter het bord kunnen tonen en zodat de schaakfans kunnen genieten van meer van de fantastische partijen die we tot nu toe gezien hebben.

Ik vraag alle partijen daarom de kalmte te bewaren en de gebeurtenissen die hebben geleid tot de niet gespeelde partij van vandaag, nog eens te overdenken.

Als ik het goed begrijp heeft Veselin Topalov een offici?ɬ´le klacht ingediend omdat zijn tegenstander het toilet buitensporig vaak heeft bezocht tijdens partijen, wat zorgt voor verdenking van oneerlijk gedrag. De Commissie van Beroep was het ermee eens dat de klacht ergens op gebaseerd was en besloot tot de oplossing om de spelers voortaan een toilet te laten delen. Hiermee maakte de Commissie van Beroep een duidelijk foutieve beslissing, die het nu welwillend zou moeten terugdraaien.

Voor het begin van de match hebben alle partijen een contract getekend. Bovendien hebben alle partijen voor de match de speelzaal gecontroleerd, alsmede de aparte rustruimtes en de aparte toiletten. Dit waren de condities waarover alle partijen overeenstemming hebben bereikt, en toen begon de match. Daarna zou geen enkele verandering van deze afspraken zonder de unanieme instemming van alle partijen kunnen geschieden. Daarom was het verkeerd van de Commissie van Beroep om van Vladimir Kramnik de condities waaronder hij had geaccepteerd te spelen, terug te draaien, namelijk het gebruik van een aparte rustruimte en toilet.

Ge?ɬ´rgerd door de beslissing van de Commissie van Beroep, die het contract van de match schendt, heeft Vladimir Kramnik verklaard dat hij de Commissie van Beroep partijdig acht in het nadeel van hem, en verzocht tot een verandering van leden van de Commissie van Beroep.

Deze hoogopgelopen zaak vraagt om compromissen van alle partijen. Daarom stel ik de volgende oplossing voor:

Om te beginnen moeten de aparte toiletten onmiddellijk in ere hersteld worden want hierover bestond overeenstemming bij alle partijen.

Ten tweede moeten de toiletten, om elke verdenking van oneerlijk gedrag te voorkomen, een bewaker krijgen.

Ten derde moet partij vijf verplaatst worden naar morgen, zaterdag 30 september 2006, op het normale tijdstip.

Ten slotte mogen de leden van de Commissie van Beroep op hun plek blijven, zoals de Commissie nu is samengesteld. De Commissie heeft wel een fout gemaakt en deze beslissing moet worden teruggedraaid. Veselin Topalov heeft de juiste kanalen bewandeld en heeft volgens de protocollen een klacht ingdiend, en zijn klacht werd gegrond geacht. Het was de Commissie van Beroep die overdreven heeft gereageerd, buiten haar boekje is gegaan en het door de FIDE getekende contract niet heeft gerespecteerd.

Ik hoop van harte dat deze oplossing zal worden gezien als gewogen en eerlijk ten opzichte van alle partijen en dat het ongelukkige verschil van mening nu snel kan worden opgelost. Dan kan de hele schaakwereld weer opnieuw genieten van het gevecht achter het schaakbord tussen twee geweldige spelers.

Re: Crisis in the Elista 2006 World Championship Match

Dear Kirsan,

I am writing an open letter to you regarding today's events during the 2006 Unification World Championship Match between the Classical World Champion Vladimir Kramnik and the FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov.

For far too long the chess world has been in a terrible schism, and a successful conclusion to the current match is of paramount importance to chess fans and to the future of our sport. With tempers currently running high, it is time for all parties to show their manifest goodwill so that the match can resume, so that the players can demonstrate their skill over the board and so that chess fans can enjoy a resumption of the exciting games we have seen so far.

I would therefore urge that all parties calm down and reflect upon the events that have led to today's aborted game.

It is my understanding that Veselin Topalov lodged an official complaint that his opponent visited his bathroom an excessive number of times during play, casting a suspicion of unfair behavior. The Appeals Committee agreed that the complaint had some basis and decided that the solution was that the players would henceforth share a common bathroom. In so doing the Appeals Committee made a clearly erroneous decision, which it should now reverse with good grace.

Before the start of the match, a contract was signed by all parties. Furthermore, before the start of play all parties inspected the playing area, the separate restrooms and the separate bathrooms. These were the conditions agreed to by all the parties, and the match began. Thereafter, any changes to these arrangements would require the unanimous agreement of all parties. It was therefore wrong of the Appeals Committee unilaterally to withdraw from Vladimir Kramnik the conditions of play to which he had agreed, namely use of a separate restroom and bathroom.

Angered by the decision of the Appeals Committee, which violates the match contract, Vladimir Kramnik has stated that he considers the Appeals Committee biased against him and asks that the members of the Appeals Committee be changed.

This highly-charged situation calls for a compromise by all parties, and I therefore suggest the following solution:

Firstly, since separate bathrooms were agreed to by all parties, they should be reinstated with immediate effect.

Secondly, to assuage any suspicions of unfair behavior, the bathrooms should have an attendant at hand during play.

Thirdly, Game Five should be rescheduled and played tomorrow, Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the usual time.

Finally, the Appeals Committee members should be allowed to remain in place as the Committee is currently constituted. However, the Committee made an error and its decision should be reversed. Veselin Topalov followed the proper channels of protocol to lodge a complaint, and his complaint was upheld. It was the Appeals Committee which over-reacted, exceeded its authority and failed to respect the contract signed by FIDE.

It is my sincerest hope that this solution will be regarded as measured and fair to all parties and that the unfortunate disagreement can now be resolved promptly. Then all of us in the chess world can resume our enjoyment of a fascinating over-the-board contest between two magnificent players.
