I started playing chess in 1983 after military service which I spent in the Lebanon with UNIFIL. In 2001 the game of Chess started to make some sense to me. See the picture below from a game against FM Fred van de Vliet back in 2001 which ended in a draw (Me far left playing a Sicilian Najdorf). I achieved a reasonable level around 2010 (see below, my old account on Gameknot). Unfortunately, that year I had to give up chess because of my work as a senior advisor at a Dutch ministry. Since July 2020 I retired and started playing chess again. I am still a bit "rusty".
