Peter Long is a former National Junior and National Champion ranked No. 1 in Malaysia for over a decade with a FIDE Rating averaging 2350.
He has been a coach all his life, as early as 1984 starting the first ever national junior development program where two years later, in 1986, his students won Malaysia’s first ever Asian Championship and only ever individual Olympiad Gold while the national team had its best ever 4th placing in the Asian Team Championships
Until recently Peter regularly coached the Malaysian Women Olympiad team and World Youth U-16 Olympiad team as well as the national teams from several other countries including New Zealand at the Baku Olympiad 2016.
Since the 90’s he has helped many young players become IMs, WGMs, and WIMs, with his most recent individual success being Indonesia’s Samantha Edithso who became World U-10 Cadets Champion in 2018 in both standard chess and rapid chess. (https://youtu.be/jX_rJy3VCUs).
Peter successfully organised the Kuala Lumpur International Open for ten years and has been an arbiter in over 300 tournaments, half of which he served as either the Chief Arbiter or Deputy Chief Arbiter.
Of particular pride was having the opportunity to be the Chief Arbiter for Chess at the ASEAN Para Games held in Singpaore in 2015.
A prolific writer with chess columns in all three leading Malaysian newspapers for over a decade, he has also been a frequent contributor to leading chess websites and blogs and had stints as Features Editor for the American Chess Magazine and both the Media Officer for the Asian Chess Federation and webmaster for the International Chess Federation.
Peter was Secretary of the FIDE (International Chess Federation) Trainers’ Commission from 2019-2022.
He has also twice served as Secretary of the Malaysian Chess Federation and has been Executive Director for both the ASEAN Chess Confederation and the Kasparov Chess Foundation Asia- Pacific.
