New in Chess Magazine Available For iPad
Recently the Dutch chess publishing house New in Chess launched an iPad app for its flagship product, New in Chess Magazine. Known as the world's leading chess magazine in the English language, “NIC” can now also be read on the iPad. The games can be played through with an internal game viewer.
The app that brings the complete New in Chess Magazine to the iPad was introduced during the Tata Steel tournament in January. When he visited the tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Garry Kasparov received an iPad with the first ceremonial copy of New In Chess magazine 2014 #1 pre-installed. In the press release, editor-in-chief Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam of the magazine was quoted:
“I am delighted that you can replay all games without the need of a chess set. This digital edition travels well. It is great that our readers can now choose between a paper and a digital edition. Or enjoy both!”
The app was developed by PubliQare, a company specialized in multi-channel publishing processes. It took about half a year to develop. At the moment only new magazines are available but in the long run New in Chess intends to digitize its archives as well.
New in Chess Magazine is the first digital chess magazine for tablets that goes further than PDF. The most important feature is the game viewer: the reader can play through all games with a specially embedded chess board.
When the magazine was launched, New In Chess gave away 50.000 free copies of issue 2013#8. This one, with a special report on the World Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand, is still available for free here.
New issues cost € 11.99/$12.99, just like the paper version. The digital and paper subscriptions are priced the same; subscribers who want to have both pay a bit more - a model that e.g. the New Yorker also uses.
At the moment only an iPad version is available, but New in Chess is working on apps for Kindle Fire and Android tablets.
