Bukhuti Gurgenidze was a Georgian grandmaster who won 12 national championships. His first Georgian Chess Championship came in 1955, and then he rattled off an astounding eight in a row (1958-1965) before adding more in 1968, 1970, and 1973. Gurgenidze trained several women grandmasters in the Soviet Union and is well-known for the Gurgenidze Variation in the Sicilian (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6 4.0-0 Bg7 5.Re1 e5 6.b4) and Caro-Kann (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 g6) defenses.
