Bio

Max Lange was a German chess player, author, problem composer, and the second president of the German Chess Federation. Lange was a four-time champion of the West German Chess Federation (in 1862, 1863, 1864, and 1868) and also won the North German Chess Federation championship once in 1868.

Lange was one of the strongest players of his time. He has two opening lines named after him: the Max Lange Attack in the Two Knights Defense and the Max Lange Defense in the Vienna Game.
