Bio

Vlastimil Hort is a Czech-German grandmaster. A candidate for the world championship during the 1978 cycle, he pushed former champ GM Boris Spassky to the limit in the quarterfinal before falling by an 8.5-7.5 score. Hort could have claimed the match by forfeit but chose not to, as GM Gregory Serper explains here.

Hort moved to West Germany from Czechoslovakia in 1985. He was Czech champion six times (1969-72, 1975, 1977) and German champion thrice (1987, 1989, 1991).
