What Is 3 Check Chess

A popular variant, 3 Check is very similar to conventional chess with only one additional rule. In it, you can also win a game by checking your opponent's king three times in addition to the regular rules for winning a match.

Notice the check counter on the left side of the board. Black delivered three checks and won the game.

In the image above, you can see that the white king still has a few escape squares, but since this check is the third delivered by Black, the game ended, and White was defeated.

Here is a video of our own IM Daniel Rensch playing a 3 Check match against GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Again, notice in both games that Danny loses not because he would be checkmated, but because MVL manages to create unavoidable check threats.

How To Play 3 Check Chess On Chess.com

Do you know that you can play 3 Check on Chess.com? To do so, follow these simple steps:

1. Under the "Play" menu, click on "New Game."

3. Select the desired time control. Notice that this variant is available only in Live Chess, and you cannot create a daily challenge for it.

Select the time control for your 3 Check game.
4. Click the "Play" button.
