The chess club in the English town of Hastings was founded in 1882. In 1895 the club organized a tournament(1) that was the strongest ever held up to that time. Taking place over the month of August all the leading players of the day participated. Among the participants were the veterans Blackburne and Bird and the young masters Janowski, Schlechter, Teichmann and Walbrodt. The favourites were Lasker, Steinitz, Tarrasch and Chigorin.

HASTINGS 1895

Still at this time, Steinitz's precepts on positional chess were not so accepted, and there were many players of the old guard who raised the banners of the Romantic School of chess.

In this particular tournament several veteran chess players championed those ideas, among the most prominent we can mention Chigorin, Blackburne and Bird.

Therefore, this tournament is a hinge between an era that is dying out and another that will soon be unquestionable and that advances in theory will strengthen.

That is why in this tournament you will be able to appreciate relentless battles and players willing to take high risks in pursuit of victory...

22 players who will play 21 rounds. I plan to publish all the rounds with all the games and the leaderboards.

Enjoy this super tournament, the first in the history of chess, and by the way compete in a tournament where you will play 10 simultaneous games with 7 days to make each move.
