Yeah i normally have my bishop on c4 before i castle therefor covering the pawn having further control of the centre squares, i know this leaves my bishop vunerable but i feel the advantage you gian if worth "the risk" as it is unusual for the oppenant to have a peice in a postion to threaten the bishop.

You bet there's a difference. While it's all, of course, dependent on the situation, generally speaking Queenside castling is considered inferior to Kingside castling for the simple reason that the "a" pawn is undefended. Sometimes this doesn't matter; sometimes you need your Rook on the "d" file right quick; sometimes a move must be utilized for the King to slide over to defend the pawn; sometimes the opponent simply takes advantage of the fact.
