I'm basically a coffeehouse player up in Humboldt County (far northern CA) who plays in OTB tournaments roughly once a year or so - I'd like to at some point try and reach other players in my area in order to organize some local chess events. • GM Robert L. Hess

Robert Hess learned the rules of chess from his father at age five and quickly became hooked. He spent his formative years under the tutelage of Grandmaster Miron Sher, whose dedicated coaching helped Robert become the K-3 National Champion in 2001. By the time Robert enrolled at Stuyvesant High School, he had secured 2 IM norms and had won the 2006 US Junior Chess Championship. Although it was difficult to compete in elite tournaments while at a rigorous school, Robert managed to balance schoolwork and chess success, earning his IM title in 2007 and becoming co-champion of the 2008 Foxwoods Open. During spring of his junior year in 2009, Robert enjoyed a tremendous winning spree during which he won the Spice Spring Invitational, earned his final GM norm at the Foxwoods Open, won the indiv...

My first chess memory is of picking up a tiny knight in a pocket chess set that I had received one Christmas shortly before my fifth birthday. "That's a knight" my dad said, "it's from a game called chess". He taught me the basic rules and I've loved the game ever since. Best present I ever had. I love the history of the game, the shared culture of chess fans around the world and the aesthetic beauty that it can produce. Oh, I quite like winning as well :) I only wish it happened more often!

  • GM Jaan Ehlvest

I am interested in chess and psychology, especially how chess can help the person grow. May chess used as indicator to measure women and men or people with different background. Also aging and chess. Being one of the top World players at the end of 80's I have tremendous experience and I know all top players from that period till today. I only did not play Magnus, but I beat Spassky in the past.

[Please Note: Don't send me Tech Support, Abuse Reports, or other "Site" issues. Please contact Support for those kinds of things. But I do love thank you notes and personal messages! Thank you!] I am the guy who put together - who came up with the site vision, put together an amazing team (Jay, Piotr, Igor, and others), and then worked day and night to design the site and get it going. I have 3 beautiful daughters, one wild son, and a wonderful wife! I learned chess when I was 8 years old, but didn't really pick it back up until about 15 years ago. Since then I have been playing, studying, and enjoying it regularly. I prefer semi-open and closed positions that blow up tactically (like the Closed Sicilian, King's Indian, Glek etc). I'm also "chesscom" on reddit.
