You'd be surprised how often I hear this:
"I don't have a rating but I play at master strength."
weird when i oppened it i wanted to write exactly the same as demurf. yeah its also one of my favorite tartakove quotes
myself my rating is 1300 but i will drew with fm now why my rating is only 1300??? caz we dont have a lot of tournys in here
One can hit a baseball over the Green Monster at Fenway, but that's a far cry from being able to even make contact with a 90+ MPH fastball.
Bottom line: playing chess well is a far cry from playing chess well against a professional in a professional environment.
I'd like to think I'm good. And I like to think I'm improving my game. But, my life has taken me in another direction to being great. ;-)
Tartakower, master of the old times, has a very smart quoate: It's always better to sacrifice your opponent's men.
It is true...I know many people who could easily win an FM or IM but they dont have the time to get a FIDE rating
Another Korchnoi qoute goes something like this,"I was invited back to Russia, and they gave me lentil soup!,without any lentils in it."
"Pawns are for schoolboys" Korchnoi.
There's another Carlsen Tata video where he gets asked if his opponent (I think it was Aronian?) missed a win somewhere, and he just responds with shrugging and saying "I dunno..."
Funniest comment was Carlsen at the Tata tournament when the reporter asked him some inane question about why he played some move in the opening. On the video you could see he was about to actually explain it to her, but then he pauses and says, "Well, you have to play something." LOL.
A small percentage of the time, I'm sure that it is true. Some people play extremely well, but not in Tournaments, hence no rating. Probobly 1-3% at best, but some.
Hahahaha oh my god that is classic!
Best one I heard in a chess club - guy is talking on the cell phone: "Yes honey of course I love you more than I love playing chess. But right now I'm playing chess."
Has it ever been true? :D
