Miscellaneous Endgame Problems

I usually don't care for problems with unrealistic board setups, but I'm making an exception here because most of  these are fairly easy(?) and they're all loads of fun once you see the solution! Be sure to click on move list even if you solve the problem in order to see any alternate solutions. The problems without any source listed all come from The Fireside Book of Chess by Irving Chernev and Fred Reinfeld, Simon & Schuster 1949. The rest come from "Practical Chess Endings" by Irving Chernev.  Check back here occasionally, I'm still adding additonal problems.

Yes, technically these are direct mate puzzles, not endgame problems per se.

Also, gauranga's guess is right: lots of people do indeed like such puzzles.

These are almost all quite unrealistic and composed positions. Oh well, I guess some people like these types of puzzles...

In the first one (richter), if black plays 1...h3 or 1...fxg3, will it be a mate in 4 or less? I don't think so. Probably it may be a help mate. Can someone work this out please?

KnightOfDaLivingDead - Not necesarily. Black can play the d, c, and b pawns in sequence. This would make mate in 4. Pointless on black's part, but whatever.

Oh, yes, the Lazard one is great.  Hadn't got to that one yet.

My fave so far is the one by Lazard with several pxp ep moves in a row. Stay tuned guys I'm going to add a bunch more!

    KnightOfDaLivingDead: 1.Qf6+? d4! (or c3 even)

I love the one by Borders.
