Have Fun and Have a Drink

Playing chess with friends is one of the best aspects of the game.  I always enjoy playing a couple games and knocking back a few drinks with close friends, why?  I do not take the game as serious as some people because it’s a game to me.  Yes, I would agree that each one of us could compare chess to our lives and that is one of the great aspects of the game.  I also know that chess is a game that can bring people together, just like athletics.    

I remember playing intermural sports in college.  Some of the teams took the stuff so seriously that it was scary.  Some people like me, played on some teams where we knew that we could drink the other team under the table easily.  We played for fun and knew that we would never become professionals.  Our postgame meetings were always fun because we were having fun and the social part of the game was what thrilled us.  I used to play with some guys who were very good and could have played on more competitive teams but didn’t.  Why?  They loved the game, not for the winning and the glory, but for the things that came along with the game.  Things like:  sportsmanship, friendship, team building, and leadership skills.  These aspects of athletics are what drove me to play sports and be involved with them.

I enjoy playing chess the same way.  Sometimes I love to win, but a lot of the times I would rather play a really good game with a couple of drinks.  I know that there are a couple of you out there that would agree with me.
