"American Chess Star" Reality TV Show

I love chess. I hate reality TV shows. I have no idea what to make of the concept of a reality TV show based around chess.

"American Chess Star" is the name of the show. I've watched the trailer below, and I still have no idea what the show will involve.  If it ever gets shown in the UK, I don't think I will be watching. Who am I kidding...it's NEVER going to be shown in the UK! Laughing

No doubt it'll be scripted or handicapped in favour of the girls in true trash TV style to gain mass appeal and obtain a female fan base. Obviously a Judit Polgar-type player may be there that beats the boys as she has in her career but it's far more likely going on statistics from chess tournaments and ratings that a boy will win, however these shows are far from 'reality'. No doubt the chess will take a back seat to the contrived personalities.

Either way, at least it pushes chess more into the public domain and Jenny looks rather hot. :)

It's a joke.. but also a promo for some kind of "extreme chess tournament" I think

I'm beginning to think it must be a joke too: a lame joke, but a joke. Even US TV can't be this bad!

I prefer a serious representation of chess.

Well, they had the Talking Heads song "Mr. Jones" on during the opening scene. Can't be all bad. And chess needs the publicity. Everyone has to sell out some day. I'm glad to see chess has its chance to do so.

Nobody will watch chess on TV. (That's what I said about about TV poker too, and fishing.)

C'mon- it has to be a joke. They don't even say what 'extreme chess' is, or what the players are supposed to get if they win. If any actual tv channel was planning to run this, the very first thing they'd do in the trailer is tell you what the prize is and what the stakes are. Otherwise, what would be the motivation to watch? So either it's just a gag, or it's an amateur attempt to get funding to do a show (which won't happen).

let face it, all reality tv show are bs nowadays. It started with Survivor it was good for a start but then inrther series was getting worse and worse, so I no longer watch it. Oh hum.

I thought it might be a joke too, but it seems to be for real. The silly trailer above is embarrasing, but there now seems to be a proper trailer.

I still don't understand the concept. Do the players win the competition by winning their games or by being somehow voted for by a panel of judges (or the TV audience)?

Anyway, it's apparently starting on the 16th Dec 2011, so US audiences will find out soon (I've no idea what station, if any, it's being broadcast on).
