Life in the Chess Olympiad

Laughing Hi Everybody!!!  Today I'm going to be talking about my teammates, the people who are going to stand by me, win, lose or draw.  Let us begin at the top of the order.  Hong Kong's board 1 for this years team is Hon Ki Tsang.  Tsang's current FIDE rating is 2085.  He is a former Hong Kong Champion, most recently in 2007, when he finished ahead of a very strong field including FM Brian Dew and WGM Anya Corke.  His style is very balanced, as he is strong in both attacking and defending.  He is also not afraid to take risks in the opening to unsettle his opponents.  Tsang qualified for this team by finishing 2nd in the Hong Kong Championship Finals this year, with a score of 7.5/11, and he moved up to board 1 as FM Brian Dew, the Hong Kong Champion, was unable to attend the Olympiad.  The following game shows Tsang's strengths well.

Hong Kong's board 2, Edgardo "Edwin" Borigas  is also very experienced, having also represented Hong Kong in the 2004 Olypiad in Calvia, Spain.  His current FIDE rating is 2005.  He is currently the reigning Hong Kong Open Champion, and he has competed in numerous Closed Hong Kong Championship Finals.  This year, he qualified for the Olympiad team by finishing 4th in the Finals, with a score of 6.5/11.  His style tends towards the more positional, but he is extremely tenacious, often pulling out wins from what look like lost positions.  This game, won from the aforementioned 2004 Olympiad, charecterises Borigas' play.

Thats it for today I think.  Join me next time as I give profiles of the remaining two members of my team.  If you want to hear anything specific about preparation for the Olympiad, or anything else about Hong Kong chess, please leave a comment below.

Cheers Everybody Laughing,
