Open with an opening I guess...

So I'm not very good.  I'm going to use this as a sort of place to keep track of my thoughts.  I've done blogging before for music theory which is what I went to school for but this is going to be a touch more personal.

Some background.

I'm going to try to keep this chess oriented though you may see a few videos that I produced on here as well.  I'm in the middle of a project and it's a challenge because we do a video every single day.  3 minutes a day, that's a feature length film every month.  It hurts.  We get it done though.  If you're at all interested, www.youtube.com/jessethunderwake

I went to the Berklee College of Music for Contemporary Writing and Production.  I'm a working mastering engineer in Austin, TX.  If you have questions on music, feel free to ask but I'm going to focus on chess here...

I got married in 2008 to a wonderful woman who tolerates my obessesions.  We got married on 6/9, I wanted the anniversary to be an off-color joke.  It certainly is easy to remember.  It was star wars themed but not cheesy.  Our minister/justice of the peace/Jedi Master was barred from wearing a lightsaber.  I wore a tux, she wore a dress.  She came down to the imperial march.  It got a good laugh.  The cake was the deathstar.

Onto the chess:

So I'm not good like I said.  I'm like an 1100 right now, I'm working really hard on upping that.  We'll see how I do in this Tournament going on right now, it's my very first one.  I didn't join too long ago.  I do some reading on chess and bounce between books here and there but my current reading is helping.  I'll talk about books another time.

So I use Glaurung on my iPhone and Mac.  Anyone have feedback on Hiarcs?  Anyway, the iPhone version has book openings and it says the Ruy Lopez has the highest statistical advantage for white.  So while I know this rotely, I have a hard time actually doing it because the Morphy defense (3..a6) destroys white's initiative and kills development.

So the book on Glaurung says to 4. Ba4 in this situation but I think maybe 4. Bxc6 is a better move because you at least retain initiative...

Anyway, this is the opening I'm kinda working through these days and I'm not sure how I feel about it despite it's statistical advantage.  Maybe I don't understand the intent behind 3. Bb5 well enough to really leverage this opening.

The game explorer doesn't really cover this well...
