The result of game 1 was a shocker: not just because Anand lost, but because of the way he lost. Within an hour of the start, his position was lost, and he resigned in less than 2 hours, lasting only 30 moves. The question on everyone's mind was: How will Anand come to terms with it? Anand had white for game 2, which was just a day after the first one.

The answer was convincing: Anand outplayed Topalov in a positional battle when the latter erred, and equalised the match at 1-1.
