1. a4: Best Chess Opening!

Dear fellow Chess.com comrades,

It has come to my attention that you have all become victims of a terrible fraud. From what I have been able to gather, most of you believe that 1. e4?? is the best, or at least a very good, opening move.

Well, I am sorry to shatter your beautiful illusion, but 1. a4!! is actually the best move in the whole galaxy, and 1. e4?? the worst. Let me first illustrate why 1. e4?? is clearly the worst move of all moves in the universe:

So now that the 1. e4?? point is proven, let me now reveal to you the true best first move for white in chess: 1. a4!!.

Not only did Winston Churchill force Hitler to lose the World War 2 after beating him in a chess game using 1. a4!!, but it is also rumored that Bobby Fischer lost to an unknown chess virtuoso by the name of Sandstreampop after Fischer, playing black, was met by Sandstreampop's 1. a4!!. Let's have a look at that game.

If you feel dizzy now, do not be alarmed. It is common that you feel faint and confused after your whole world has been turned upside down. But this is really for the best. From now on, I hope you never play 1. e4?? again. I trust you now play the best move in the whole intergalactic space.

You are welcome.

This is the first time I know that a 4 is the best. I tought that we have to control the center?

Vyomo

What a joke!

I understand that it is very shocking to hear this. But try it out in a few of your games and you'll get a hang of it! :)

Good luck champ!

RoffleMyWafflez

Wow, just looked that Fischer game up and it's legit.

Maybe I should give this a4 a shot although we all know OP is exaggerating its capabilities just a tad.

My god Vyomo! Are you alright? It clearly explains in my annotation that 1... d5 forces black to eat a whole raw egg with the eggshells and everything! That's dangerous! Don't tell me you played that!? You should go to the hospital immediately.

Good luck, champ!

Castle149

What Sandstreampop said was forced was not forced at all. For example, Nc3 wasn't a forced second move becuase almost all Grandmasters play Nf3 to reach a Ruy Lopez. Furthermore Bb2 when mate was very clear wasn't forced because of Nf3. Last of all very rarely does anyone fianchetto their dark sqare bishop when playing e4 and none of the moves he said were forced were actually forced. Every World Champion has played e4 and no one plays a4 not even 5 year olds.

If you think that d5 was a bad move you don't know the basic principles of chess. D5 controls the center, opens up lines for the bishop, and helps prepare castling to some extent. While a4 takes space in a place where nothing is happening making it a wasteful move.

sandstreampop

Hey Castle149!

Thanks for your input!
Unfortunately, the Bb2 move is forced as any other move causes pancreatic cancer for white.

You should really read the annotations.

Good luck, champ!

Efim_Bogoljubov

a4? nothin compared to the power of h3!

Castle149

Can you even give me a reason why Bb2 is forced instead of the stupid excuse that it gives you cancer? The reason your rating is only 1236 online is because you don't understand the basic principle of chess that  says why a4 is bad.

Conquistador

This is erroneous.  1.a4?? fails to develop the king for the endgame.  After 1...e5! followed by 2...Ke7!, white is going to lose a tempo in developing his king, and face a losing endgame.

sandstreampop

Wow, Efim, that h3 was a great move! White crushed black. I especially like the hypnosis spell that black was under. Great chess.

After that display I'm ready to call 1. h3 the second best move in the whole universe.

And this just makes me wonder...

What happens if you combine the two best moves in the whole universe!? Let us find out!

My god. This just keeps getting more and more groundbreaking.

duskrevival
Don't misjudge 1.e4 as a good move like this allows 2.Ke2!! Winning tempo in the endgame and black can only resign here!
Castle149

F5 is not forced at all  after a4 any Grandmaster or the average tournament player would e5 and d5 to take control of the center and let out all his pieces.

Conquistador

If you play 1.a4, you should follow up with 2.h4

Hmm, duskrevival also mentioned the importance of developing the king as early as possible. Let me check this out!

Wow, that was not pretty. Granted: if you play 1. e4?? followed by 2. Ke2!!, you will win. I admit that.

Hey, that's not forced at all! White could easily have retaliated 1... exd1=Q?? with 2. kick the black player in the groin. Checkmate, Chuck Norris style.

Good luck, champ!
