5.f4 in the french advance variation

Houdini doesn't like this variation... Why not?


I don't understand why you need to play 5.Nf3 to overprotect the pawn. f4 claims some space and eventually you can play f5. Since white's goal in this variation is usually to attack kingside, f4 seems to fit the theme of the opening pretty well.

That's just the question i have!!! Black's plan often involves attacking e5 rather than d4, so f4 solves this.

I do not have engines so, what does houdini say?

Useful link. Houdini suggests Nf3. I still don't really understand why d4 is in need of protection so badly though.
