I did beat a FM OTB in a blitz tourney, I've posted that game a few times.
Mate with a pawn on move 11 (? or therabouts) against the Alekhines Defense. Good times....
Yeah I remember that thread.
There's a very simple principle:
Learn enough to get to a playable middle game, but not more. If that means you must know a concrete line in a certain opening to get by, so be it.
