You do have to try the main line, and the Catalan is not suitable for class players- needs very good positional understanding, patience, and fine endgame technique.
The Catalan does require immense finesse.
But I have fun with it.
Last year I've almost switched from e4 to d4 and I'd like to try the Catalan as a way to avoid some important defenses for black. A good choice for a low rated player as me, or perhaps too much subtle? It seems like black could take the c-pawn and keep it hold without too very much risk, unlike it happens in QGA. Maybe I should try first 5. Qa4+ instead of the main variations?
Thanks in advance.
