It's not wrong to learns openings but don't forget that on lower levels opponents don't stick to mainlines that often so you should now what to do against the so called "second rate" moves in the opening. So besides opening theory you still need to play logical chess in the opening.
If you become better at logical chess then your middlegame positions will be stronger as well. It's much better to have a plan for your pieces then just repeating memorised theory because you immediately know what to do if your opponent does not oblige.
