Has anyone seen this response to the english opening before? If yes where can I find some more information on it. I've never seen it before.

Any help here would be much appreciated, to be honest I was just a bit thrown by this opening move.

Yes. 1.c4 a6 2.e4 transposes to a recommended line for White in the St. George Defense (1.e4 a6 2.c4!?) and works to prevent 2...b5.

Sounds good, I've heard that too. The so called "Three Pawn Attack". c4/d4/e4 has been touted since the 70's or 80's. And in your game he's playing BL a tempo down by move 2 ... if you do go that way. Or the simple 2.Nc3 you note to the game, is fine also.

But about the game, I wouldnt worry about it too much when you're winning by move 6. Looks like he's the one that needs an improvement.

Actually BL could conceivably have been trying for a weak transposition to a St George/Owens Defense. Or even a pretty weird transposition to something called a Kurjatko Gambit. (Normally 1.c4 Nf6 2.d4 b5 !? 3.cxb5 a6 ...where it seems to be a playable opening if one becomes deeply versed in it and has a feel for the peculiarities) I doubt this was the case ... but if it were, then your Qa4 probably REALLY "thrown" Him, and for that reason, I have to love your unusual response. Nothing like a good Counter-Throw and it has a certain cramping effect to it also, besides being peculiar. lol. Yeah, I like that move.

On the otherhand ... forgive me for sounding a bit Silmanesque, as he seems to say it a lot ... but its rather a basic tenent: If your opponent's moves are non- responsive to what YOU are doing, then ignore him and keep doing what you were doing. Especially with White. Play with intiative unless he can wrest that from you. The burden is on Black.  Don't become overly "Reactive" unless/until he is threatening to do something that can actually hurt you. Geez, Another Silman word. Please Lord, don't ever let me describe Dynamics or Compensating Advantages as "Imbalances"! No, I couldn't live with that. Thats Betty Ford Center time ... Silman addiction. Aieeeee
