vs. Sicilian

Sort:
BMeck

When I first started on this site e4 was almost always meant with e5.... but now that my rating is a little bit higher I tend to see the sicilian more often now. My question is what is best for white to play against it, in your opinion. Closed, open, or anti sicilians like the smith morra. I love non mainstream openings so if there is a reply that is considered to give black equality please post it as well, I would not mind playing it as white especially since I would know it better. Thanks everyone for your help

Be a gent and play the Open Sicilian.

It's either going to be a) the Open or b) not the Open. The good thing about it is that it's probably White's best shot at an advantage. The not (necessarily) so good thing about it is that you're playing into Black's hands. Playing 3. d4, mindlessly hoping that you'll be okay, is probably a recipe for disaster. Playing 3. d4 with some experience + theory behind you, though - you could do a lot worse.

My recommendation would be to put some time into learning how to face the most common Open Sicilians: Najdorf, Dragon, Schev, Kan etc. Maybe not right now, but it'll certainly pay off in the long run.

I would recommend a solid and yet very playable system as White, something other than the open.  Leave the open Sicilian as white for when you are stronger and have better preparation.

I would recommend the closed sicilian  2.Nc3.
