Judit Polgar comes in mind. She was ranked top 10 in the world at some point. Other female chess players don't even come close, past or present.

Judit Polgar has, for a couple of decades, been the world's best female player. But now, Hou Yifan is coming on strong. She had a bad Women's World Championship tournament, but she is still on pace to become the second woman to break 2700.

top female players:

judit polgar is the most accomplished female chess player by far although her sisters are very well accomplished chess players too.  hou yifan is the current women's WC at the age of 18 and the very respectable rating of 2603.

of current female players/contributors on this site, wgm natalia pogonina often contributes blogs/articles, wgm camilla baginskaiite (apologies for name butchering if i did so) has contributed a few chess videos, and wgm tatev abrahamayan won the recent death match against anna zatonskih (3 hours straight of blitz and bullet on chess.com tv (can be seen in the more tab) in addition to providing a few excellent videos on the french defense.  also user batgirl has some very interesting blogs on historical figures/ places in chess if you're into that sort of thing.

historically of note are NONA GAPRINDASHVILI and MAIA CHIBURDANIDZE for being the first female players to attain the GM title in 1980 and 1984 respectively.

Also notable is Vera Menchik who beat several notable players in the 1920s-30s.

Curiously to me Greece and at least some former soviet republics seem to have an inordinate number of female chess players.

Judit Polgar definitly. She and her sisters did what many chauvinists said was impossible.

Judit has never tried for the womens championship, though. But she has come much closer to the men's title than any lady before her.

From what I understasnd, she took some time off from chess to bear and raise several kids. And that affected her performance.

I still love to watch her play, though. Her tactics are crazy!

This is not even a debate: Judit Polgar. And not just now, probably of all time.

The men's best has as many answers and opinions as threads on c.com. ;-)

certainly the best female chess player is Garry Kasparov, i don't know why you keep posting girls names.

female are men removed from their intimate parts, we should not make DISCRIMINATIONS about gender

You can say that again.
