Is there, or has there ever been any female Grand Masters?

Nytik

Only a few have reached Grand Master, but a lot have achieved Woman Grand Master. There have been 11 female Grand Masters to date. (I believe.)

GotGoose

Judit Polgar is one.

Here you have the answer to your question:

Some names as Judit Polgar or Nona Gaprindashivili are not mentioned due to the fact they are innactive.

Sure, and even before the establishment of the GM title, there had been some great women players.

Minato

there are women grandmasters just not many right now, I expect as chess gets more popular there will be many more

If I remember correctly, Hou Yifan is now a Grandmaster at 14 years of age. So, maybe she'll push all the way and become, not just the best female player, but best player overall one day :)

Humpy Koneru, is also a strong player. I don't know much about her, or if she has been tipped to break into the top 10 or not.

The most recent female to gain the full GM title is our very own Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant. Not a particularly Scottish name, I know, but she married a Scotsman and has been living and playing here for many years now.

So, obviously, first port of call, Wikipedia (lazy, i know) and there she was. What an amazing list of acheivements. I'm surprised that she did not become a GM sooner.

Have you ever met her or played against her?

Really???

Dr. Lasker had a brother who was a very strong chess player -- but I guess that's pre-title. But what about Donald and Robert Byrne (did one stay at IM?) I can't believe there's isn't some Russian family with five GMs in it.... do you mean to say there's never been a father/son (or father daughter for that matter) GM GM combo?

There is a picture about two-thirds down here with two children both with two GM family members and the text adds a third child with two GM family members so there are at least four families where there are two GMs.

"Both the girls above have GM parents – GM Pia Cramling and GM Juan Manuel Bellon, GM Bartosz Socko and GM Monika Socko. Are there and other children with two GM parents? [Addendum: Songhao Li of Toronto, Canada reminds us that GM Mohamad Al-Modiahki and GM Zhu Chen have at least one child. Absolutely correct. We blush to admit we missed it – Modahki and Chen are great friends of ours.]"

Still you can say: That's the only family ever to boast 2 female GMs.Smile

Zsuzsa Polgar provides at least one other set of GM siblings, Jozsef and Csaba.
